The Quest for Love

PART IV: A NIGHT IN JAIL

Pei Lynn got furious. She started screaming and kicking up a fuss, and the monks, terrified, called in the police. It took four policemen to hold her down. She was thrown into the local jail to spend the night.

"What about my one phone call?" Pei Lynn demanded as they locked her up. All they did was laugh, and told her she watched too much Western television..

Depressed, she tried to get onto one of the bunks in the cellmates, only to have the other cellmates shouting and pushing her off. There were not enough bunks to go around in that tiny cell, and Pei Lynn was forced in the end to sit on the floor.

Suddenly, she heard a phone ringing, and found one of the cellmates sitting next to her answering and talking on the cellphone. Without hesitation, she asked him and pestered him to let her use his mobile phone. It was only after much persuasion and bribery did he finally let her use his phone, on the condition that it was he who talked on the phone, i.e. acting as the middle man. Pei Lynn asked one of her bodyguards to bail her out, which the bodyguard promised to do as soon as possible.

Pei Lynn stayed up waiting for her bodyguard for hours, who never showed up. She was furious at her predicament. She thought bitterly about the wasted months, the fruitless efforts, the lost love. She felt exhausted. In the middle of the night, when one of the cellmates on the bunk rolled off the bed in her sleep, Pei Lynn went quick as a shot to the empty bunk, and she fell asleep the moment her head hit the pillow.

Her bodyguard came only way after the break of dawn, around lunchtime, which at that time was pointless as Pei Lynn was just about to be released anyway. When she arrived, Pei Lynn was too tired to scold her, but only gave her a menacing glare which told her that she was not going to get paid as much as she hoped she would. As they stepped out of the jailhouse, they were swarmed by local journalists who were hoping to get an interview out of her, as this was the most sensationalising news they had in their town for ages.

Pei Lynn and her bodyguard fought their way through the crowd, and got back to their bus. Depressed by the whole incident, Pei Lynn declared the journey over, to the cheers of her bodyguards.
